The James Webb Space Telescope successfully deploys the tripod that holds its secondary mirror, marking a critical milestone for the $10 billion mission. This 2.4-foot-wide mirror sits on the tips of three long booms and plays an essential role in the observatory's complex optical system. The deployment follows the recent successful unfurling of Webb's solar array and five-layer sunshield.

Webb functions as a three-mirror anastigmat telescope, relying on a specific path to capture images of distant stars and galaxies. The large primary mirror collects incoming light and reflects it to the newly positioned secondary mirror. From there, the light bounces back toward the primary mirror before passing into the tertiary and fine steering mirrors, finally reaching the four scientific instruments located behind the primary mirror.

The deployment process begins at 10:40 a.m. EST when controllers release a series of launch locks that keep the telescope safe during its journey off Earth. After a small test movement and a quick confidence check, engineers command the full extension of the support structure. The tripod reaches its fully extended position just 11 minutes later, and controllers spend the next 45 minutes securely latching the secondary mirror into its final place.
