WeChat Quietly Launches Credit Scoring System for Over 1 Billion Users
Tencent's WeChat introduces a credit-scoring system for its billion-plus users, challenging Alibaba's Sesame Credit.
Tencent's WeChat quietly launches "WeChat Payments Score," a new credit-scoring system that leverages data from over 1 billion users. The platform soft-launches in November across eight cities, initially piloting on apps like the Tencent-backed power bank rental service Xiaodian. Users who achieve a score above a certain threshold enjoy perks such as waived deposits.
This new system factors in users' shopping habits and contract-fulfilling records to determine their overall rating. It functions as a direct competitor to Alibaba and Ant Financial's "Sesame Credit," which operates since 2015. Both platforms reward higher scores with similar benefits, creating a competitive landscape in China's digital finance sector.
Digital footprints play a crucial role in these systems by helping China's developing financial infrastructure predict creditworthiness. This approach provides financial access to millions of people who lack traditional banking and credit records. As WeChat expands this feature, it signals a major step in integrating social and payment data into mainstream financial evaluations.
