The Writers Guild of America tackles the complex issue of artificial intelligence by proposing regulations that control its use without implementing a total ban. This strategy develops from internal working group discussions where guild leaders evaluate how to protect writers from the emerging threats posed by AI technology.
Van Robichaux, a WGA West board member, stands out as an early voice on this issue after raising concerns about AI during his campaign last summer. At that time, he remains the only candidate out of 17 to highlight the technology as a potential threat, predicting that the industry eventually recognizes the importance of addressing it.
Instead of demanding a complete prohibition, the guild crafts proposals that allow AI to exist as a tool while preventing it from undermining writers' credits or compensation. This nuanced approach shapes a significant part of the ongoing strike negotiations as Hollywood grapples with the rapid advancement of generative technology.
