Wing Launches First FAA-Approved Commercial Drone Deliveries in the US
Alphabet's Wing begins delivering packages to U.S. customers in Virginia through a new pilot program with Walgreens and FedEx. This milestone marks the first federally approved commercial drone delivery operation in the country.
Alphabet's drone delivery company Wing officially begins serving U.S. customers after securing the first federal Air Carrier Certificate for commercial drone deliveries. The inaugural pilot program takes place in Christiansburg, Virginia, where Wing partners with FedEx Express and Walgreens to transport a cough and cold pack directly to local residents. This achievement makes Walgreens the first U.S. retailer to complete a store-to-doorstep drone delivery.
FedEx plays a crucial role in this pilot by acting as the first logistics provider to handle an e-commerce drone delivery as a separate shipment. Wing also teams up with a local Virginia retailer called Sugar Magnolia to demonstrate how drone technology handles last-mile e-commerce deliveries. Through this local partnership, customers receive small everyday items like chocolates and paper goods directly at their homes.
The new FAA certification allows Wing pilots to manage multiple unmanned aircraft simultaneously while providing public service. This milestone highlights a growing trend in the logistics industry, especially since UPS also recently gains FAA approval for commercial drone operations. Although widespread drone delivery remains a long way off, these initial limited deployments signal that autonomous delivery services are quickly becoming a regular fixture in American transportation.
