WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warns that the global situation will worsen, with the number of cases, deaths, and affected countries continuing to climb. As of this announcement, 114 countries report 118,000 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and nearly 4,300 deaths.
In the United States, officials diagnose just over 1,000 cases and report 29 deaths, though they caution that ongoing testing limitations obscure the true scale of the domestic spread. The virus typically causes mild respiratory infections in about 80% of patients, though 15% develop severe illness and 5% require critical care. WHO officials previously hesitate to use the pandemic label out of concern that it might cause governments and individuals to abandon their containment efforts.
Despite the elevated classification, the WHO stresses that fundamental public health interventions still successfully limit transmission and reduce case numbers, pointing to successful efforts in China, Singapore, and South Korea. Tedros emphasizes that describing the crisis as a pandemic does not change the threat level or the recommended actions for countries. He notes that this unprecedented health crisis touches every sector of society, meaning every individual and industry must actively participate in the fight against the virus.
