Elon Musk's social network X introduces Aurora, a new photorealistic image generator integrated directly into its Grok assistant. The tool becomes available to all users just after X makes the Grok chatbot free for everyone, allowing free accounts to generate up to three images per day. Users access Aurora through the Grok tab on both X's mobile apps and the web interface.
The new image generator operates with very few restrictions compared to competitors. Aurora readily produces images of copyrighted characters like Mickey Mouse and allows graphic content, although it currently blocks nude generations. The exact origins of the model remain unclear, but Musk confirms on X that it represents xAI's internal image generation system, which is still in beta.
While Aurora excels at creating highly photorealistic landscapes and still lifes, it is not without flaws. Early user tests reveal common AI image generation issues, such as objects blending unnaturally together and people missing fingers. Despite these imperfections, the rapid and quiet weekend release signals xAI's accelerating efforts to build independent AI tools directly into the X platform.
