X Makes Grok AI Chatbot Free for All Users With Usage Limits

X is opening up its Grok AI chatbot to all users for free, offering 10 prompts and 10 image generations every two hours. The move creates a freemium model that directly competes with ChatGPT and Claude.

X expands access to its Grok AI chatbot by making it free for all users on the social media platform. Previously, the artificial intelligence tool remains locked behind an X Premium subscription that costs at least eight dollars a month. Now, anyone with an X account interacts with the chatbot without paying a fee.

The free tier gives users 10 text prompts and 10 image generations every two hours. Image analysis is more restricted, as free users analyze only three images per day before X prompts them to subscribe for a premium plan. This new structure creates a freemium business model that mirrors the strategies of competitors like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Anthropic's Claude.

This expansion follows a recent trial in countries like New Zealand and coincides with significant financial backing for xAI, the company behind Grok. An SEC filing reveals that xAI just raises six billion dollars, bringing its total funding to twelve billion dollars. This massive capital injection supports the company as it pushes Grok to a much larger audience.
