X faces a new $1.9 million fine from Brazil's Supreme Court as the final condition to end its month-long ban in the country. The social network agrees to the terms and expresses respect for the nation's sovereignty.
X faces a new fine of 10 million reais, or about $1.9 million, as the final hurdle to ending its ban in Brazil. Supreme Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes states that the social network immediately resumes operations in the country once it pays this additional penalty. This fine comes on top of the 18.3 million reais X previously owes for failing to block accounts accused of spreading election misinformation.
The judge requires Musk's satellite company Starlink to drop its appeal against the previous financial penalties before X officially returns. The social platform shut down its Brazilian operations in late August after a prolonged legal battle over content moderation, which causes competing services like Bluesky to surge in local popularity. X briefly circumvented the ban earlier this month through a Cloudflare infrastructure switch, prompting this latest monetary demand.
X appears to fully accept these strict conditions to regain access to its large Brazilian user base. The company's Global Government Affairs account acknowledges the situation by stating that X respects the sovereignty of the countries where it operates. The post adds that providing access to Brazilian users remains essential for a thriving democracy.
