X Subscribers to Receive Early Access to Elon Musk's Grok Chatbot

Elon Musk reveals that xAI's new conversational AI, Grok, leverages real-time data from X and offers a humorous alternative to ChatGPT. The chatbot rolls out to Premium Plus subscribers once it exits early beta.

Elon Musk reveals that his new AI startup, xAI, develops a conversational chatbot named Grok to compete directly with ChatGPT. The new system answers questions with a distinct sense of humor and sarcasm, setting it apart from more straightforward AI models. Musk highlights that Grok incorporates real-time access to information from the X platform, giving it a significant advantage in delivering up-to-date responses.

The chatbot includes standard web browsing capabilities to search for current information on various topics, but it still enforces safety guardrails. For example, Grok refuses to answer sensitive queries like how to manufacture illegal substances, though it responds to such prompts with a notably wry tone. xAI currently offers a limited number of users in the United States access to the system through an official waitlist.

X subscribers gain exclusive early access to this new technology once it finishes its early beta testing phase. Users who pay for the $16 per month X Premium Plus plan automatically receive Grok capabilities as a subscription perk. While xAI keeps most technical details about the model's inner workings under wraps, the company previously confirms a partnership with Oracle to train its AI systems on Oracle's cloud infrastructure.
