Xiaomi Extends Lead Over Samsung as India Smartphone Market Hits Record High
Xiaomi remains India's top smartphone vendor for the eighth consecutive quarter, outshipping Samsung as the overall market reaches a record Q2 high. Chinese manufacturers dominate the landscape by offering high-spec devices at budget-friendly prices.
Xiaomi holds its position as India's top smartphone seller for the eighth consecutive quarter, solidifying its lead over Samsung. The Chinese electronics giant ships 10.4 million handsets in the quarter that ends in June, capturing 28.3% of the market. Samsung trails closely with 9.3 million shipments and a 25.3% share, highlighting a persistent rivalry in this crucial region.
India stands out as a rare bright spot in the global smartphone industry, with overall shipments reaching a record 36.9 million units in the second quarter. While worldwide shipments decline by 2.3% year-over-year, the Indian market grows by 9.9% as tens of millions of users buy their first smartphones. Other Chinese brands like Vivo, Oppo, and Realme also see significant growth by aggressively marketing during events like the local cricket season.
The driving force behind this market expansion remains the strategy of offering better specifications at lower prices. Seventy-eight percent of all shipped phones cost less than $200, with the average selling price settling at $159. However, the $200 to $300 price range emerges as the fastest-growing segment, experiencing a massive 105.2% growth compared to the previous year.
