XPeng Unveils City Driving Tech and Flying Car at 2021 Tech Day

Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng reveals a range of new technologies at its 2021 Tech Day in Beijing to build a broader mobility ecosystem. Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng emphasizes that the company focuses on efficient, safe, and carbon-neutral solutions that extend beyond standard smart EVs. The event highlights XPeng's commitment to bringing cutting-edge mobility tech directly to mass-production models for everyday consumers.
The centerpiece of the announcement is Xpilot 3.5, an advanced driver assistance system designed specifically for city driving. Slated for release in the first half of 2022 for the lidar-equipped P5 sedan, this system features a City Navigation Guided Pilot that handles complex urban scenarios. By combining rule-driven and data-driven artificial intelligence, Xpilot 3.5 safely navigates static objects, pedestrians, and lane changes at various speeds, pushing XPeng closer to its goal of full Level 5 autonomy.
Beyond autonomous driving software, XPeng showcases a next-generation flying car developed in partnership with HT Aero. The company also introduces a robotic unicorn designed for children, further demonstrating its expansion into diverse segments of the future mobility market. These innovations position XPeng as a direct competitor to Tesla by utilizing a similar data-heavy approach to gradually evolve from Level 2 driver assistance to complete self-driving capabilities.
