Y Combinator President Sam Altman Steps Down Amid Major Accelerator Shake-Up
Sam Altman transitions from his role as Y Combinator president to chairman as the accelerator undergoes significant operational changes. The company is relocating its headquarters to San Francisco and expanding the size of its startup batches.
Sam Altman steps down as president of Silicon Valley accelerator Y Combinator and transitions into a chairman role. YC partners take over Altman's day-to-day responsibilities, with CEO Michael Seibel continuing to lead the core program. Sources indicate the firm currently has no formal succession plans in place.
This leadership change arrives alongside a series of major shake-ups at the prominent startup accelerator. YC plans to move its headquarters from Mountain View to San Francisco to be closer to alumni and eliminate difficult commutes. The firm notes that the center of gravity for new startups has shifted significantly over the past five years.
In addition to relocating, YC greatly expands the size of its cohorts and writes larger checks to portfolio companies. The upcoming demo day features over 200 companies across two separate stages. Altman plans to focus his attention on other efforts, including his role as co-chair of the artificial intelligence research organization OpenAI.
