YC-Backed Fondo Raises $7M to Tackle Accounting Shortage With AI

Fondo, an AI-powered bookkeeping and tax platform for startups, raises a $7 million seed round to address the widening gap between new businesses and a shrinking pool of accountants.

Entrepreneurship in the U.S. is booming with an average of 430,000 new business applications submitted every month in 2024, but a severe shortage of accountants threatens these growing companies. Nearly 75% of CPAs are expected to retire within the next decade, and fewer graduates are entering the accounting profession. Serial entrepreneur David Phillips launches Fondo to bridge this exact gap by combining artificial intelligence, software, and human accounting experts into a single platform for startups and small businesses.

The four-year-old startup operates on a profitable subscription model and currently serves approximately 1,200 customers, generating $6 million in annual recurring revenue. High-profile clients like ElevenLabs, Karat, and PostHog rely on Fondo to manage their finances. The platform reports significant financial impacts for its user base, saving customers over $75 million in Delaware Franchise Tax and securing more than $16 million in IRS tax credits to date.

To accelerate this momentum, Fondo raises an oversubscribed $7 million seed round led by Tokyo-based fintech Money Forward, with additional participation from Y Combinator and several venture scout funds. The new funding values the company at $66 million and positions Fondo to compete against similar services like Pilot and Bench. Phillips argues that Fondo stands out by offering an all-in-one solution specifically tailored for high-growth startups, eliminating the inefficiencies and errors that come from juggling multiple separate financial services.
