YC-Backed Trella Tackles Egypt's Costly and Opaque Trucking Industry
Egyptian startup Trella uses an app-based platform to bring transparency and efficiency to the country's expensive trucking and shipping sector. Backed by Y Combinator, the company currently manages 1,500 loads per month for 20 shippers.
Y Combinator continues to serve as a vital bridge for emerging market startups seeking American investment, particularly in the logistics sector. Following the success of companies like Flexport and Rappi, Egyptian startup Trella joins the accelerator's growing portfolio of international freight and shipping innovators. The company already partners with 20 shippers and actively manages 1,500 loads per month across the country.
Trella focuses on consolidating Egypt's highly fragmented trucking industry through an app that provides vital price transparency and shipment tracking. By directly connecting carriers and shippers, the platform increases operational efficiency and removes the opacity that historically plagues the market. Co-founder Omar Hagrass states that the primary goal is simply to bring much-needed visibility to an inefficient supply chain.
The startup operates within a highly connected African tech ecosystem, sharing insights with similar logistics companies like Kobo360 in Nigeria and Lori Systems in Kenya. For Hagrass, solving these logistical challenges carries deep personal significance, as it offers a direct way to improve everyday Egyptian lives without navigating government hurdles. Transporting goods in Egypt currently costs three times more than in the U.S., presenting a massive opportunity for Trella to reduce expenses and boost the broader economy.
