YouTube Introduces New Controls for Third-Party AI Training on Creator Videos

YouTube launches a dashboard feature allowing creators to authorize specific AI companies to train on their content. Google continues to exempt itself from these new third-party restrictions.

YouTube introduces a new setting in YouTube Studio that allows creators to control how third-party companies use their videos for AI training. Eligible creators can opt into this feature to select from a list of 18 specific AI companies, including OpenAI, Apple, and Meta, or choose to allow all third parties to train on their content. This update gives administrators direct control over their data through the Content Manager dashboard.

The launch comes as a direct response to widespread complaints from creators who discover their material trains AI models without their consent or compensation. While this new feature restricts outside access, Google clarifies that it will continue to train its own internal AI models on YouTube content under existing creator agreements. Furthermore, the platform's Terms of Service still strictly prohibit unauthorized scraping or data access by any third party.

YouTube views this opt-in tool as an initial step toward helping creators who actually want to license their videos for AI development. In the future, the platform plans to enable direct video downloads for the companies that creators officially authorize, which potentially paves the way for new compensation models in the generative AI era.
