YouTube Updates Give Users More Power Over Video Recommendations
YouTube introduces new features that allow users to block unwanted channels from recommendations and see exactly why specific videos are suggested.
YouTube rolls out new features that give users greater control over video recommendations on the Homepage and in the Up Next section. The app now displays personalized suggestions based on related videos, content from the currently viewed channel, and other videos tailored to the viewer's interests. This exploration feature is currently available for signed-in users on the Android app, with plans to expand to iOS, desktop, and additional languages soon.
Users now have the ability to explicitly stop YouTube from suggesting videos from specific channels. By accessing the three-dot menu next to a video on the Homepage or Up Next section, viewers can select the "Don't recommend channel" option to remove that channel's content from their future recommendations. This feature is available globally on the YouTube apps for Android and iOS, and the blocked channels remain accessible through direct searches, subscriptions, or the Trending tab.
YouTube also provides unprecedented visibility into how its algorithm works by explaining why a specific video appears in a user's feed. Underneath each suggested video, the platform now displays a brief reason for the recommendation, such as noting that viewers with similar interests watch that particular channel. This transparency helps users understand the algorithmic connections and discover new channels that align with their viewing habits.
