Lightning AI Secures $40M to Build Modular Operating System for AI Development
Lightning AI raises a $40M Series B to expand its platform that allows users to build AI and machine learning applications using modular, open-source components without needing deep technical expertise.
Lightning AI brings a modular approach to building artificial intelligence and machine learning applications. Similar to how WordPress uses plugins to create functional websites, this platform provides independent building blocks that users easily combine to create custom AI workflows. The system allows developers, researchers, and data scientists to group open-source components into complete, scalable end-to-end machine learning systems called Lightning Apps.
The platform removes traditional technical barriers by letting users build production-ready AI pipelines or research projects without deep coding expertise. Users customize the underlying code of these components as needed and choose their preferred tools and technologies. Once an app is complete, creators either keep it private for their own use or republish it into the community for others to utilize.
This new $40M Series B funding round, led by Coatue with participation from Index and Bain Capital Ventures, brings the company's total funding to $58.6M. Lightning AI currently offers its service for free for up to twenty total apps, while paid plans provide expanded capabilities and usage limits for larger teams and more demanding projects.
