Smart Eye Buys iMotions in $46.6M Deal Signaling DMS Industry Consolidation

Smart Eye acquires human behavior software company iMotions for $46.6 million to expand its driver monitoring capabilities. This latest purchase highlights a rapid consolidation trend among DMS suppliers driven by new European regulations and rising automaker demand.

Smart Eye agrees to acquire human behavior software company iMotions for $46.6 million in a cash-and-stock deal. This purchase follows Smart Eye's acquisition of emotion-detection startup Affectiva just five months ago. iMotions operates as a standalone company within the Smart Eye Group and retains its current management team and 63 employees.

This acquisition highlights a growing consolidation trend within the driver monitoring systems sector. Smart Eye CEO Martin Krantz points to increasing OEM demand and strict European regulatory requirements as primary drivers for this industry shift. He notes that nearly all global automakers plan to procure their first or second generation DMS technology in the coming years.

Driver monitoring systems gain attention as automakers deploy Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems that require continuous human oversight. These camera-based systems track driver attentiveness to prevent the misuse of partial automation features like hands-free driving. While companies like GM and Ford actively use DMS for this purpose, Tesla is only recently expanding camera-based driver monitoring across its newer vehicle models.
