A new app called Squad makes it easy for friends to do nothing together by combining video chat with seamless mobile screensharing. Users chat with up to six people and instantly switch from showing their faces to broadcasting their phone screens to browse memes, discuss direct messages, or get opinions on dating profiles.

This casual approach to screensharing acts as a digital "third place" for teen girls, similar to how Fortnite functions for adolescent boys. The app takes advantage of Apple's ReplayKit, which only recently becomes stable enough with iOS 12, while faster LTE networks make mobile screen broadcasting actually watchable.

Squad already attracts significant attention from tech giants, with employees from Facebook and Snap signing up to study the startup. Backed by 2.2 million dollars in funding, the company now plans to introduce URL-based viewing for live broadcasting and release a software development kit to bring this shared screensharing capability to other applications.
